Custom Lighting
Lighting has a job to do, but doesn’t mean it has to be ordinary. We fabricate custom fixtures and integrated architectural lighting in our San Diego shop.
A Little More Than Light
A chandelier can completely change the character of a room. A softly illuminated wall or a line of light tucked into the architecture can have a quieter effect, but it’s just as intentional. At Tecture AF, we fabricate custom lighting that does both. From sculptural pendants and suspended light installations to linear fixtures, backlit panels, and integrated architectural lighting, our work takes many forms. Some pieces become the focal point of a space, while others are made to blend seamlessly int their surroundings. We collaborate with architects, interior designers, lighting designers, and project teams to bring these ideas to life, creating one of a kind fixtures and larger lighting installations for restaurants, hotels, offices, hospitality spaces, and commercial environments throughout San Diego and Southern California.
There’s a lot that goes into making lighting look effortless. The way a material catches or diffuses light, how a fixture is suspended, where the wiring is concealed, and even how someone will access a component years down the road can all influence the finished piece. These are details we work through in our technical and production drawings, not things we leave to figure out during installation. Our 25,000 square foot San Diego shop brings metal fabrication, woodworking, digital fabrication, acrylic and polycarbonate work, and finishing together under one roof, with local artisans contributing specialty glasswork when a project calls for it. We can test illuminated samples, explore different materials and finishes, and work closely with the project team to make sure the fixture looks and performs the way it’s intended to. Whether we’re fabricating a single sculptural statement piece or lighting that’s integrated throughout an interior, the same attention goes into what you can see and everything you don’t.
How A Graphics Program Comes Together
Environmental Graphics Built Across San Diego
Downtown San Diego
Cascading polycarbonate panels come together to form a suspended light sculpture inside Streamline. The layered installation creates a flowing form overhead, bringing movement and dimension to the space.
North Park, San Diego
Seventy-two individually crafted light bars come together in a 50 foot suspended installation above a research and development lobby. The undulating fixture brings movement to the space while creating a sculptural feature overhead.
La Jolla, San Diego
Cast concrete and wood come together in sculptural fixtures made for George’s at the Cove. Prototypes helped refine the cast components before fabrication, bringing a beautifully contrasting material pairing into the restaurant’s lighting.
FAQ
-
Yes! We work with architects, lighting designers, and project teams to turn an existing concept or specification into something buildable. If the details are still developed, we can help resolve the materials, connections, and fabrication approach without taking over the project’s creative direction.
-
Absolutely. Lit mockups are particularly useful when diffusion, color, finish, or repeated fixtures matter. We’ll work out the appropriate sample and approval process for the project before moving into full production.
-
We coordinate the fixture’s LED components, drivers, and control requirements with the project team, including systems such as 0-10V, DALI, and DMX where applicable. Compatibility and the division of work with the electrical and controls contractors are established before fabrication.
-
We install the fabricated fixtures and architectural elements within our scope, including complex suspended assemblies. Final power connections and building-side electrical work are coordinated with the project’s licensed electrical contractor. We clarify that handoff early so nothing gets left between the trades.
-
It’s something we think about before the fixture is built. Driver locations, access panels, and replaceable parts are considered wherever the assembly allows, so routine service doesn’t mean taking apart the entire feature.
